Trucking's Green Incentive

The trucking industry has a natural incentive to be green as fuel is a major expense. Tractor manufacturers are working to deliver more fuel efficient power units. The hybrid tractor pictured above is expected to save $10,000 annually in fuel. Hats off to Peterbuilt for building the first hybrid tractor and to Wal-Mart for ordering it.

Fuel Prices, Trucking and the Environment. What we all can do.

Higher fuel prices are nothing new and with peak oil, won't be going away. But did you know trucks consume an estimated one gallon of diesel fuel for each hour at idle, using as much as 2,000 gallons (per truck) of fuel every year? This amounts to 1 billion gallons of diesel fuel consumed every year from idling costing approximately $2.2 billion and emitting 11 million tons of carbon dioxide, 180,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 5,000 tons of particulate matter annually.

What we can do:

Join the Smartway Partnership

Whenever possible load and unload trucks in a timely fashion, so that more of their fuel is used transporting goods and not waiting for them to be loaded or unloaded.

Do your part to reduce fuel consumption. Even if you don't drive a truck or load one you can still help. We can all carpool, eliminate unnecessary trips and consider a fuel efficient vehicle.
